Supporting Korean Charities
Since our founding in 1977, BASS has sought not only to support the British expatriate community, but also to provide financial assistance for Korean charities. Our welfare committee is responsible for selecting, visiting, assessing and approving support to charities. In 2007, thanks to the generosity of our members, the business community and our Korean hosts, the British Association of Seoul donated over KRW 200 million to Korean charities. Funds are raised throughout the year via our various activities, but our main fundraising event is the Queen's Birthday Ball in June. BASS raised over 200 million KRW in 2007 and over 160 million KRW in 2008. p>
Some of the projects currently supported by BASS
St.Colomban's Home For The Sick, Chun Cheon
The New Day Room & The new bedsIn 2007 the St. Colomban’s Home for the Sick, run by Sister Nora, was our main project. The Home was finished in 2004 but because of limited funds, a day room for the residents was postponed. With the support of BASS, they were able to convert a first floor balcony to a fabulous new day room, facing the mountains and sun and by moving the laundry to an outside building they are now able to use this space for the care of an increased number of out-patients. BASS contributed KRW 67.000 000 to the Home.
St Joseph’s Home for Young Women, Gangjin

The St. Joseph’s Home is a boarding school for Middle and High School girls in Gangjin, in the south of Korea. These are mostly daughters of farmers in the surrounding area who live too far out and are too poor to make the daily journey because of travel costs or go to school at all.
Their building was in dire need of a new more efficient heating system. BASS, by paying for an upgrade of KRW 20.380.00 for the system, was able to help them cut their energy costs by 30%.

One of the Skills:
Making Eco-Friendly DetergentLocated in Kwangju, the Emmaus Centre is a large and varied facility for almost 700 adults with physical and mental disabilities, where members learn skills which allow them to enter the open job market or earn a living at the center itself. The centre is headed by Father O'Neill. One of their projects for their members, is a candle making factory which needed money for supplies. The candles are sold, or made to order. BASS, this year, ordered candles from the Emmaus factory for selling at the SIWA bazaar and to use as gifts at the annual BASS Christmas lunch. BASS donated KRW 4.400.000.

Meals on Wheels Programme during the winter months
paid for by BASSThe St. Patrick’s Centre was started and is run by Father Francis, Anglican Priest.
BASS supported 2 of his projects:
- The Meals on Wheels programme for elderly poor people living in the country side had to be abandoned 2 years ago due to lack of funds. With BASS help they were able to start up this programme again for the cold winter months, to make sure that about 60 elderly people get a weekly delivery of healthy supplemental food. BASS donated KRW 5.320.000
- The Posil Bakery is a new small scale project to help mentally challenged do a rewarding job and hopefully make this into a profitable little enterprise. BASS donated the first 9 months worth of supplies to get them going after which they hope to be able to manage on their own.BASS donated KRW 5.220.00
