Number 12 on the Trip Advisor list of places to visit in Seoul, and many Seoulites’ favourite temple, today we will enjoy a tour of Bongeunsa.

Located in the heart of ritzy Gangnam, north of the COEX Mall, the shrines and halls of this Buddhist temple stand in direct juxtaposition to its corporate high-rise surrounds. Founded in AD 794, the buildings on this tree-filled hillside location have been rebuilt many times over the centuries and our guide, Professor Cho will give us an insight into the history, architecture and importance of the site.

The tallest statue of Maitreya Buddha in Korea is also located here.  Erected in 1986 and completed ten years later, the giant statue reaches 23 meters in height and seems to look over all the inhabitants of the city. The courtyard where the statue is located is used for various ceremonies and cultural events.

Bongeunsa is more than a just temple. It provides a place to relax for busy city people.  It also gives visitors a chance to reflect upon themselves and runs a temple-stay programme for guests.

After our tour, for those that have time, we will take lunch at a nearby restaurant.
